Information for High School Students

The Physics Students’ Society is always keen to get high school students involved with the physics community as much as possible. Unfortunately, practicality always seems to get in the way. Almost all our activities occur during school hours, and as we have a duty to provide responsible service of alcohol, some of our events are unsuitable for under-18s.

They best way to get involved with physics whilst you’re still at school is through the Physics Outreach Program, which is organised by the School of Physics at Melbourne Uni. In particular, the VCE lecture series will be of interest to students in years 11 and 12.  You can check them out at http://physics.unimelb.edu.au/Community/Physics-Outreach

A few members of the Physics Students’ Society are often present at the beginning of these  lectures to talk to students about their experiences at university, and tell them a bit about the Society.

Finally,The_Feynman_Lectures_on_Physics if you’re after a good physics resource, you might like to get yourself a copy of The Feynman Lectures on Physics, published by Addison-Wesley. They cover more advanced material than the VCE, but are perfect for gaining a qualitative understanding of many of the physics topics you are likely to encounter in your first year at university and beyond.

It’s a little pricey, but it certainly makes a good birthday present for the aspiring physicist.
