The Physics Students’ Society will be running two exciting events during National Science Week.
1. Rocket Science
This is your chance to press the big red button during National Science Week! We will be launching model rockets at Scienceworks in an interactive event open to the general public and PSS members.
Date: Sunday, 14th August, 2011
Time: 10:30 AM — 3:30 PM, with major talks at 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM
Venue: Scienceworks, 2 Booker St, Spotswood
(N.B.―in the case of inclement weather, the event will run the following Saturday, 20th August)
We’ll have a variety of model rockets on hand, as well as a bevy of scientists and engineers from the University of Melbourne to answer all your questions about rockets and rocket science. Entry to Scienceworks is free for children up to 16 years and concession card holders (including student cards), and $10 for adults.
The event is supported by a grant from the Australian Government as part of National Science Week.

A preview of some of our rockets in action! We also have a camera to attach to the rockets (centre top) and an altitude meter (centre bottom)
2. Physics in the Pub – “The Tools of Big Science”
Date: Monday, 15th August, 2011
Time: 6:30 PM — 9:00 PM
Venue: Pugg Mahones, Carlton (171-175 Elgin Street, Carlton)
The next installment of the PSS’s signature event takes you to the very heart of modern science and technology. Join us for a panel-led discussion on the Large Hadron Collider, the Australian Synchrotron, and the tools of modern astrophysics. Entry is free, with meals available at bar prices.
National Science Week 2011 will run from 13th ― 21st August, 2011. Join us as we celebrate science, technology and Australia’s contributions to it.
